The Fortress was military property up ‘till 1975 and was then abandoned. In 1990 it became part of the heritage of the Aosta Valley Region. An interdisciplinary team of professionals, coordinated by regional authority officers, drafted a feasibility study for the reclamation of the entire monumental complex and for part of the village.
A joint stock company named Finbard was established to finance the reclamation phase and plan for the management of the site and correlated activities upon completion of the works.
Major building-engineering works were carried out between 1999 and 2002:
- implementation of security measures in the fortress;
- restoration of the upper part of the fortress: the Carlo Alberto building and the Gola building;
- external scenic lifts;
- access and parking facilities;
- repaving, lighting and renovation of 4 historical buildings in the village.
Between 2003 and 2005:
- the Vittorio, Mortai, Polveriera and Ferdinando buildings were reclaimed, the two roads leading to the fortress were settled and the outer wall surface of the building was renovated.
- the furnishing of reception areas, restaurants, shops and offices.
- the “Alps Museum”, the “Dream Alps” exhibition and the “Vallée culture” promo area were set up.
The latter were inaugurated on 13th January 2006 and have since been open to the public.
Now there is also the opere Mortai (reclaimed as a parking and rest stop for school children) and the Polveriera (former powder magazine now turned into a class room).
